BIOGRAPHIE
BIOGRAPHY
Yacout Kabbaj was born in 1983. She is a Moroccan visual artist and a student at the School of Fine Arts in Tetouan. She lives and works in Casablanca.
She is part of the post-internet movement, following the trajectory of Glitch Art, transforming frozen moments of digital errors online into tangible aesthetic artworks offline.
In a society that, through its socio-cultural mechanisms, conditions the public to constantly experience discomfort or even fear in the face of malfunctions, Glitch—a computer malfunction—proves to be a highly appropriate metonymy.
The artist, a skilled master of metamorphosis, transcends the pejorative view of Glitch as an error within established social, cultural, and sexual systems. She deconstructs the dominant grip of globalization to make it a necessary erratum, a radiant starting point. This malfunction, a true catalyst, cannot be reduced to a simple mistake. Instead, it becomes the spark that ignites the journey of women.
In her ingenious work, she uses these glitches as an expressive palette, depicting technological flaws as moments of vulnerability where women have managed to assert themselves. They reclaim ground in this ambiguous society.
Through her artistic compositions, where layers of paint overlap, Yacout brings to life a prominent central rectangle representing patriarchal domination that has relegated women to the margins for centuries, framed by delicate colored strips. Each layer symbolizes the victories achieved by women during societal malfunctions, like brief flashes of triumph.
